The Philippine Basketball Association has announced important dates for those who wish to join the PBA Annual Draft on Aug. 13.
First among these is for the Fill-foreign aspirants. They are given until May 5 to submit their applications along with the necessary requirements.
“We expect a good number of Fill-foreign players in the draft. That’s why we are making the announcement early to give them enough time to work on their documents,” PBA commissioner Noli Eala said.
To be eligible in the draft, Fill-foreign players are required to submit the following: Bureau of Immigration certificate of recognition, Department of Justice affirmation, applicant’s authenticated birth certificate issued by the National Statistics Office, authenticated birth certificate of the applicant’s Filipino parent, marriage certificate of applicant’s parents or in the absence thereof due to circumstances beyond applicant’s control, legal recognition of the applicant’s Filipino father, duly notarized or authenticated naturalization papers of Filipino parent, duly notarized affidavits of at least three persons residing in the Philippines attesting to claim of citizenship of applicant.
Aside from these documents, the Commissioner’s Office will also conduct interviews on Fill-foreign aspirants from May 8-31 and their eligibility can be contested until July 3. JSV with PBA Media Bureau report Local born aspirants may submit their applications until July 14.
The final list of candidates will be issued to all member teams by the Commissioner’s Office on Aug. 1.
This early, FEU stalwarts Arwind Santos and Mark Isip, La Salle’s Joseph Yeo, Ateneo’s LA Tenorio and Fil-Ams Kenny Williams and Joe Devance are high in the list of the teams’ shopping list.
The team with the rights for the No.1 pick will be known towards the end of the ongoing Gran Matador Brandy PBA Philippine Cup.
Ten teams will join the draft exercise with the entry of Welcoat, which has been given the No.10 and 11 picks.
Welcoat is also allowed to automatically elevate three players from its Philippine Basketball League squad to the PBA. (JSV with PBA Media Bureau report)
