Techni-Ice 2001 beats JV 2002, makes QFs

Techni-iceE 2001 played cool at crunch time to outlast JV Bakeshop 2002, 60-53, in their do-or-die match for the last quarterfinal berth in Division II of the Cecaba’s 8th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup last Tuesday at the City Sports Club-Cebu.

Class 2001 and 2002 ended the elimination round with identical 3-7 win-loss records but the older graduates marched into the next round because of the winner-over-the-other rule.

Still, Class 2001 faces an uphill climb in the quarterfinals as it needs to beat defending champion Big Boss ’96 twice to advance to the semifinals.

Eric Cabana showed the way for Class 2001 with 20 points and a career-high 22 rebounds, while Paul Martin Gabatan added 15 points, nine rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals.

The score was tied at 44-all after three quarters, but Cabana and Gabatan presided over a game-closing 16-9 run to wrap up the win for Class 2001.

Earlier, in the clash of winless squads, Gregoria’s Curtains and Trims Haus 2005 prevailed over Juvis Marketing 2003 in overtime, 96-88.
