DOT implements program to help create employment

For the first time in its 34 years of existence, the Department of Tourism (DOT) is involved in creating jobs.

Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano has initiated a program called “TourismJobs,” which creates jobs and opportunities and promotes the establishment of businesses in the tourism sector.

DOT 7 Director Aurora Patria Roa said the program aims to create employment opportunities for graduates of tourism-related courses.

Find people

“This is in support of President Arroyo’s 10-point agenda. Aside from providing employment, the program will also help companies in the tourism industry to immediately find the right people to work for their respective companies,” she told a press conference yesterday at the Table 7.

The “TourismJobs” is designed to address the scarcity of qualified talents to fill up job openings in tourism and to improve the current BS Tourism curriculum to meet the actual needs of tourism-related enterprises.

Launching

The program will be launched in Cebu on April 4 through the two-day Tourism Jobs Fair to be held at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino. The event serves as the DOT’s one-stop venue for employers, academe and the labor sector to assess each other’s needs and create an employment match, aside from creating a databank for the tourism industry.

Roa said the DOT is encouraging all job seekers, and even those already employed, to visit the fair and register. Those who cannot register during the event may visit www.tourismjobs.ph and register online.

Employers and applicants who have already registered may continue to access their profiles for updates, see new vacancy listings or post new job slots.

The resumés of applicants who will not qualify for the positions offered at the jobs fair will be compiled in a databank and will be referred to the Tourism Industry Board Foundation Inc., which can offer further skills training.

Roa said more than 100 companies have confirmed participation in the jobs fair.

These include Aboitiz and Co., Bohol Beach Club, Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Cebu City Marriott Hotel, Cebu Holdings Inc., Speechcom, Cebu Visitors and Convention Bureau, Hilton Cebu Resort and Spa, L.A. Ducut and Co., PeopleSupport, Plantation Bay Resort and Spa, Rajah Park Hotel, Smart Communications Inc. Travel Vision and Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.

The TourismJobs is also supported by SM and the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (JBN)
