MANILA – Five Cebu schools clinched spots in the semifinal round in Boracay after the final day of qualifying games in the 10th Nestea Beach Volleyball Tournament at the De La Salle Greenhills in San Juan City.

The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) and University of San Carlos (USC) took two of the four Men’s division semifinal
berths at stake in the Visayas Regional elimination despite contrasting fates yesterday, while University of the Visayas (UV), USJ-R and giant-killer University of Southern Philippines (USP) joined top-qualifier University of San Agustin of Iloilo in the Visayas delegation to the Women’s semifinals.

USJ-R, the losing finalist in the 2005 national championship, needed extra periods before pulling a very close 30-28 win over USC to take the No.2 spot in the Men’s semifinals.

But the loss hardly mattered for USC as it took the fourth slot after beating Bacolod City’s University of St. La Salle, 25-20, early in the day.

Dumaguete City’s Foundation University, the 2001 national champion, defeated Bacolod City’s University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R), 25-19, to top the Visayas Men’s elimination.

UNO-R claimed the third seat to the next round.

Boracay will host the semifinal round for the fifth time starting on May 4.

USP earlier clinched a spot in the Women’s semifinal after conquering three-time champion Southwestern University.

A total of 12 teams, four each from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, will vie for the top P100,000 top prize in Boracay.

Defending Men’s titlist College of St. Benilde led the Luzon qualifiers along with Far Eastern University, St. Francis of Assissi College and University of Baguio.

The Mindanao teams are Ateneo de Davao Blue, Mindanao State University of Tawi-Tawi, Capitol University of Davao and University of Mindanao-Davao.

In the Women’s division, Holy Cross of Davao College repulsed the challenge of University of Mindanao-Tagum, 25-22, to lead the semifinal cast along with University of Mindanao-Davao, a 25-6 winner over MSU-Tawi-Tawi.
