Sarangani gets P53M farm roads

Alabel, Sarangani - Gov. Miguel Dominguez and Department of Agriculture Regional Director Roger Chio signed a Memorandum of Agreement on Wednesday to implement P13.5M farm-to-market road projects.

It was part of the P53M approved fund for Sarang-ani under the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) Support to Emergency and Livelihood Assistance Program (Selap).

“Sarangani has the advantage over the other provinces in Mindanao because it has the biggest budget,” said Chio.

He added, “Sarangani was also the only province in Soccsksargen region to get Selap funding.”

Under Selap for 2006 in Mindanao, the budget breakdown was P53 million for Sarangani; Tawi-tawi-P3.9 million; Sulu-P28.7 million; Agusan del Norte-P23 million; Agusan del Sur-34.8 million and Zamboanga del Sur-17.9 million.

Chio said access roads to production areas are important for the transport of products.

“We are putting up infrastructure support to get the confidence of investors,” he said.

In return, Dominguez said Sarangani has been showing results in terms of the expansion of high value crops.

Job creation

“Hopefully we will be creating more than 2,000 jobs by yearend,” Domin-guez said.

“Significant economic activity will be generated within the province, especially with the infrastructure support that we will be receiving from DA,” he added.

The governor noted that the Selap assistance “will surely create leaps and bounds in terms of economic progress for the province especially in agriculture where the most common complaint is the roads.” (Sun.Star Da-vao/Sunnex)
