Cebu Journalists Medical Aid Fund on; P4M from del Mar, Cuenco starts proje

Cebu City Reps. Antonio Cuenco and Raul del Mar doled out P2 million each from their Philippine Development Assistance Fund to the Cebu News Workers Foundation (Cenewof) as standby fund for medical and hospitalization aid for members of Cebu media.

Dr. Mila Espina, vice chairman of Cenewof, received the symbolic check of P4 million from Cuenco and Del Mar.

The amount constitutes as seed money for the Cebu Journalists Medical Aid Fund, which Cenewof will administer.

Espina also received a license from the Department of Social Welfare and Development that allows Cenewof to undertake the program and disburse funds for it, during Sun.Star Cebu’s media dialogue with regional directors and government information officers.

Government officials and public information officers who attended the media dialogue witnessed the turning over of the donation and the awarding of the license.

Cenewof has long adopted the hospitalization and medical aid program for its members, but because the P4-million aid from Cuenco and Del Mar are considered special funds, the foundation has to formulate a separate guideline on how to disburse these and who are qualified to avail themselves of the medical assistance.

Cuenco (Cebu City, south), in a talk with Sun.Star Cebu, said an income of P10 million for the program before the yearend is not impossible, with him and Del Mar (Cebu City, north) helping the foundation in raising funds.

Bobby Nalzaro, columnist of Sun.Star Cebu and Superbalita and news anchorman of GMA 7 Balitang Bisdak, said editors in print media and news managers in TV and radio or the Kapisan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) should give ideas for the guidelines.

Espina, for her part, said Cenewof has a general guideline on its hospitalization and medical aid program, but a committee will have to draft a separate guideline for the special funds.

The committee is composed of Sun.Star Cebu editor-in-chief Pachico Seares, Nalzaro, Ed Abad and Bong Aznar of the KBP and Michelle P. So of Sun.Star Cebu and Sun.Star Publishing Network. (AIV)
