Hannah’s ousts Class ’99, bags Cecaba semi s seat

The third-ranked Hannah’s Cakes and Decors 2004 hammered out a 72-63 victory to oust the sixth-seed Cebu Pacific Transport ’99 and advance to the semifinal round in the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association’s 8th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup last Sunday at the City Sports Club Cebu gym.

In the other game, Cokaliong Shipping Lines ’98 lived to fight for another day after escaping with a 67-65 win over the twice-to-beat JRJ Enterprises 2000. Thus, Class ’98 meets Class 2000 anew on April 9 in a sudden-death duel for a semis berth.

Christian Espada unloaded a game high 20 points, half of which he made in a sizzling 29-12 run in the second quarter that turned Class 2004’s 14-17 deficit into a 14-point advantage at halftime, 43-29.

Class ’99 rallied in the third canto, 18-13, but Class 2004 neutralized its opponent in the closing minutes of the game to march into the next round without any hitch. Danel Hayag and Aljhune Areja backed up Espada with 12 points apiece, while Eliot Emerson Uy added 10 markers for Class 2004.

Ruben Yap Jr. and Genseric Rowie Tan connived for 39 points for Class ’99.

In the nightcap, Elvis Evangelista erupted with 22 points and Robinson Yap added 17 markers to help Class ’98 forge a rubbermatch with Class 2000. The two protagonists figured in a hill-to-hill battle the entire game, with Class ’98 taking just a two-point edge, 67-65, with less than a minute left to play.

Overtime

Class 2000 could have forced overtime, but top gunner John Brian Lo muffed a potential game-tying layup with five seconds to go. Lo fired a game-high 24 points, but got only solid support from Alfie Romero Chua with 11 points as Class 2000 faltered in clinching an outright semis spot.
