Jewelers whack Warriors in Iloilo

The M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu picked its third straight win, capitalizing on the error-laden Toyota Iloilo Warriors for an 86-72 victory in the Mindanao-Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Visayas Division at the University of San Agustin Gym in Iloilo City Sunday night.

The Jewelers used a crippling full-court trapping defense to impose their commanding presence throughout the game.

Former Alaska Aces guard Stephen Padilla finally made an impact after a sloppy performance the past two games as he scored 15 points to lead the ML kwarta Padala scorers.

Control

Alano Caputolan and Enrico Llanto also proved to be tough to contend down low as the former SWU Cobra and USC Warrior power forward added 14 and 11 points, respectively.

The Jewelers erected an eight-point lead at the end of the opening quarter and never allowed the Warriors to make a comeback, controlling both the backcourt and the frontcourt to build a 68-53 lead entering the final frame.

Despite the 20 points of Eldrin Senieres and the combined 25-point production of Edgar Castro and Elben Leonida, the Warriors failed to counter the attack of the Jewelers as they suffered a humiliating debut loss at their own homecourt.

Mindanao

Meanwhile, the winless Cagayan de Oro Rapids hope to barge into the winner’s column as they host the Mindanao division No.2-seed PacMan-GenSan tonight at the Xavier University Gym.

Cagayan de Oro coach Boy Dacoco will again lean on center Mark Benitez, and the scoring trio of Jong Rebuya, Gabriel Maloloy-on and Abe Galinato to get the Mayor Vicente “Dongkoy” Emano-owned team into the winning column.

PacMan, on the other hand, is on a two-game win streak as coach Ramon Pido will rely on power forward Jaypee Locsin, Dondon Tadena, Apol Coronado and Louie Medalla.

ML Kwarta-Cebu (86) – Padilla, Caputolan 14, Llanto 11, Rodriguez 9, Ramirez 8, Enriquez 7, Ocañada 6, Piodo 6, Aying 5, Mepaña 3, Manigo 2. Toyota-Iloilo (72) – Senieres 20, Castro 13, Leonida 12, Poral 9, Bautista 9, Sencil 5, Balgos 4.

Quarters: 18-10; 45-33; 68-53; 86-72. (RCM)
