Marina clears grounded vessels after owners fix safety violations

The Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) 7 has cleared all eight vessels that were earlier grounded for safety violations.

The management of the vessels, plying routes from Cebu to other islands, were able to correct the defects listed in a cease and desist order issued by Marina Director Glenn G. Cabañez.

The ships cleared by Marina were: mv Georich of GP Shipping Lines, mv Santiago de Bohol of Lite Shipping Lines, mv J&N of J&N Shipping Lines, mv Gloria II of Gabisan Shipping Lines, mv Leyte Star of Maypalad Shipping Lines, mv Bantayan of FJP Shipping Lines, mv Andy Two of VG Shipping Lines and mv Tagbilaran Ferry of Rolly Shipping Lines.

Order

The cease order against them was issued last March 28. Mv Georich and mv Santiago de Bohol were cleared on the same day because the defects were immediately corrected.

The other vessels were grounded until March 30 and 31 because of serious violations like the lack of life-saving jackets, expired fire extinguishers, lack of manpower and many others.

MV Andy Two had an expired clearance and certificates, and had no international safety management certificate. MV Bantayan, on the other hand, had an unlicensed electrician, lacked 100 life-saving jackets and had expired fire extinguishers.

Marina conducted surprise inspections on vessels as part of their preparation for the Holy Week.

Cabañez wrote General Manager Mariano C.J. Martinez of the Cebu Port Authority that deficiencies of the vessels were already rectified, thus the request to lift of the denial of ship departure clearance. (EOB)
