Rizon makes last 8 By Jade S. Violeta Sun.Star Staff Reporter
University of Cebu’s (UC) James Bell Rizon is right on track in his campaign to defend his crown after he led yesterday’s quarterfinalists in the first of the JVC Regional Badminton Championships’ four-leg provincial circuit at the Holiday Spa in Banilad, Cebu City.
The defending champion Rizon eliminated University of the Visayas’ (UV) Raymark Go, 21-11, 21-6, in the round of 16 to barge into the quarterfinals of the Juniors 16-Under division.
Rizon will face Anthony Bergantin in the semifinals after the latter defeated Talamban’s Kevin Genobia, 21-13, 21-7, in their own round-of-16 encounter.
Also entering the quarterfinals in the Juniors 16-Under division is UV’s Joe Charles Marigomen, who ousted UC’s Mark Joseph Fuentevella, 21-12, 21-11. Marigomen will square off with schoolmate Jeffrey Lepaopao, a 21-14, 21-19 winner over Joel Christian Mendez.
Another UV player, John Niño Taboada, secured a seat in the quarterfinals after he beat University of San Jose-Recoletos’ (USJ-R) Vin Paul Palacio, 21-15, 21-14, to set up a match against UC’s John Roy Densing, a 21-11, 21-11 winner over UV’s Jay-R Batulan.
Completing the cast of quarterfinalists are USJ-R’s Clint Angelo Armamento and Bruce Steven Galon. Armamento scored a 21-12, 21-18 victory over UV’s Pablo Arededon, while Galon defeated St Louis Mandaue’s Gerald Vince Conde, 21-7, 21-11.
Armamento will face Galon in the semis. (JSV)
