Magsaysay: A Eurasian wedding
By Jo Magsaysay
Whatever

Under a flower-bedecked gazebo, a beautiful Eurasian wedding was being celebrated; a romantic fusion of East and West as petite Kate Dychangco exquisitely fragile, like a China doll, pledged her vows to love, honor and cherish the handsome young Italian, Marco Anzani namesake of the legendary Venetian traveler, to be his wife forever…in sickness and in health, for richer, for poorer, "till death do us part."…

A ripple of excitement rolled across the terrace garden, the wedding guests thrilled to witness through huge video screens mounted on several vantage points, the ceremonies officiated by the Reverend Pastor Samuel Lacanienta Jr. A wave of applause signaled closing rites as the entourage lined up for the recessional, a promenade through the "Camminata Nel Vigneto" (The Vineyard Walk). More applause greeted the members of the wedding, the lively Dychangco twins, Shelah and Sarah, their sister’s maids of honor with the groom’s best man Guiseppe Genco. The pretty bridesmaids Holly Dawn Dychangco, Maybelline Te, Cristina Lim - escorted by groomsmen Mario Edward Escario, Gil Carungay and Shem Jose Garcia – wore swinging white satin skirts and shell pink halter tops by Jed Sevilla; Cristelle Lou Dychangco, junior bridesmaid and Stephan Kapek, coin and bible bearer next in line.

The secondary sponsors paraded past: Gordon Joseph and his Corinne, pretty in pink, Gabriel Luis Quisumbing and another Pink lady, Gail Antonette Soco and blondies Victoria and Elkin Marin also favoring the pink scheme.

Returning the cheers from their friends, the parents of the bride Renato and Gilda Dychangco Jr., waved and smiled joyfully and with an air of distinction, the parents of the groom Osvaldo and Silvana Anzani coming all the way from Italy for the happy occasion quietly walked by. I personally reserved my loudest claps for Aurora "Ching" Santos Dychangco, a dear friend and beloved lola of Kate, who was gorgeous in a pink chiffon gown. She was escorted by Pastor Lacanienta.

Twenty-six principal sponsors distinguished in their own right as very dear friends and close associates of the bridal family paraded past. Shall we name them in the order of their prominence or preferred listing: Jose CH. Alvarez and Maria Iris Arcenas, Jeffrey Kevin Chancellor and Evelyn Shih Luym, Norman James Espina and Alice Benin, Francesco Giudicelli and Vivien Lu Aguilar, Arthur Go and Lily Gothong, Albino Gothong and Emma King, Johnny T. Hernandez and Erlinda Panganiban, Michel Lhuillhier and Evelyn J. Sanchez, David William Luchow and Carmen Garcia, Antonio Reina and Lydia Sia, Exequiel Robles and Pinky Tobiano, Timothy Norman Wright and Mona Annette Wright, Carlos Yeung and Dr. Helen Yap.

The loudest cheers and applause of course were for the brand new couple, Mr. and Mrs. Marco Anzani, he spruce in white tux, she an absolute doll in her bridal gown that the avante-garde Joy Bernaldez created with a flirty skirt and a modest sheer bodice, a saucy chapeau of beads and feathers tilted, French-like, on the side of her head. A blessing from heaven, a sprinkle of shower followed the young bride and groom while guests quickly scurried for shelter. The intermittent showers however, failed to dampen the spirits of the others, must have been 800 to 1,000 guests, who made a beeline for the food stations where the specialties of Orchidia and Paparazzi emerged as harmoniously as their chefs in residence. Naturally, there was spaghetti, fusilli, gnocchi, penne, lasagna, and risotto at the Pasta Station; grilled prawns, grouper, medallions of beef at the Grill; U.S. Angus beef, leg o lamb and baked salmon for Carvings; salads and cold cuts and pizzas and cheeses, pastries, cakes and fruits. All in abundant supply to feed even a whole army.

****

For a wedding souvenir, tegola, an Italian tile with a molding of grapes, to remember to raise a toast to the good health and happiness to this lovely couple. Con amore!
