Cebuano named papal nuncio to Papua New Guinea

Another Cebuano has earned a high post in the Catholic Church after the Vatican confirmed his assignment as the papal nuncio to Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.

The Cebu Archbishop Palace received the assignment of Msgr. Francisco Monticello Padilla, who is currently assigned in Australia, as among the Apostolic Nuncios from the Vatican. He could not assume the post, though, until he becomes an archbishop.

Archdiocesan spokesman Msgr. Achilles Dakay told Sun.Star Cebu in a mobile phone interview last night that an Episcopal ordination for Padilla to make him archbishop has been scheduled on May 23 at the Metropolitan Cathedral in Cebu City.
Pope’s eyes, ears

Padilla is the 10th of 13 children of Dr. Tiburcio and Concesa Padilla and the second of the siblings to gain a high post in the priesthood. His elder brother, Osbaldo, the third of the siblings, is the papal nuncio to Costa Rica.

“Kanang Papal Nuncio eyes and ears kana sa Pope sa lugar diin ka gi-assign.

Ang konswelo lang nato diha kay ilang madala ang atong hiyas dinhi sa Pilipinas ilabina dinhi sa Sugbo nga kitang mga Pilipino mga maayo ug buotan. (The papal nuncio is the eyes and ears of the Pope in the place he is assigned. At the least, he can bring along the values of Filipinos and show that we are a good people),” Dakay said.

Born on Sept. 17, 1953, Padilla became a priest on Oct. 21, 1976. His ancestral home is on Arlington Pond, Cebu City. He went to the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome, a school for priests selected by the Pope himself to be trained as pontifical nuncios.

“Candidates to study in the academy are well selected, because they are trained on diplomatic skills, and that academy is for those who should become pontifical nuncios,” Dakay said. (AIV)
