Coke, Giants win, tie SMB at the top
Coca-Cola and Purefoods Chunkee created a triple tie among sister teams after beating separate teams yesterday in the Gran Matador Brandy PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Tigers opened the hostilities by beating the Red Bull Barakos, 89-85, while Purefoods scored a 105-94 win over Air21 Express in the nightcap.
The Tigers and Giants are now tied with San Miguel at the top spot with a 5-2 win-loss slate each.
Another sister team, Ginebra, is at solo second with a 4-3 slate.
The loss dropped the Barakos to 3-4 in a tie with the Alaska Aces, while Air21 Express suffered its fifth loss in eight games.
Rookie Denok Miranda played like a seasoned warrior for the Tigers as he logged in a career-high 21 points on a 7-of-10 shooting from the field. He also had six assists to grab the best Player of the Game award.
Billy Mamaril also played a monster offensive game for the Tigers as he chipped in 18 points, Ali Peek added 14 points and six boards and Rafi Reavies had 11 points and nine caroms.
The Tigers, who prevented a two-game skid, led all the way from start to finish, taking the opening quarter, 21-18, edge and led by 41-37 at the half. (JSV)
