UV, UC pairs make last 16

University of the Visayas (UV) and University of Cebu (UC) sent the most teams yesterday into the round of 16 of the Men’s Doubles Elite category in the JVC Regional Badminton Championships at the Holiday Spa in Banilad, Cebu City.

UV owned the bulk of tandems with five, while UC sent three teams into the round of 16.

University of San Jose-Recoletos has two teams in the round, while one team from the University of San Carlos advanced to the next round.

Elizer Yac and Tony Abellana led UV’s onslaught after they demolished Levi Manabat and Rey Karl Andrante, 21-7, 21-12, while their teammates Rolando Suico and Bryan Tanudra followed them with a 21-13, 21-5 romp over the pair of Ernesto Paires and Mark Anthony Palicava.

Other winners

Also making it to the round of 16 for UV were Mark Anthony Parantar and Melvin Sumbala, who bested Carlos Ortega and Roger Flores, 21-5, 21-12; John Mar Montecillo and Adrian Ardiza, who blasted Josephus Aventanyo and Jomel Alvia, 21-5, 21-5; and Niño Anthony Go and Mark Kim Carbajosa, who eliminated Ramil Kiamco and John Gachua.

UC’s representatives to the last 16 are the Jonathan Olofernes-Ralph Jed Sumalinog and Dennis Olofernes-Dax Dacalos tandems, who both drew a bye in the previous round.

UC’s other pair, Alvin Seno and John Michael Pasanting, had to boot out Quickshot Poona’s Julius Dimakiling and Christopher Zamora.

USJ-R teams

Prisaa National gold medalist Jan Spyro Mijares and Solito Flores of the University of San Jose-Recoletos took an automatic spot after drawing a bye. They will face Yac and Abellana.

Another USJ-R pair, Patrick Duarte and Renz Gabuya, also made their way into the next round after drawing a bye and they will face UC’s Pasanting and Seno in the quarterfinals.

Also securing seats in the quarterfinals were Rufino Talion and Andrei Mark Peroy, who defeated the pair of Steve Alda and Alex Choachuy, 21-16, 21-8; Bruce Steven Gallon and Francis Rey Gomez, who drew a bye; and Gerard Malixi and Erwin Jasper Arquillano, who booted out Alroy Loquinario and Wairlo Reyes, 21-11, 21-13.
