Bohol boxing shows off 'Pacquiao wannabes'

SEVEN up-and-coming boxers, led by the promising 17-year-old AJ Banal and crowd-pleaser and RP No.1 super-flyweight Robert Allanic are hoping to gain a share of the following hogged largely by Manny Pacquiao, Rodel Mayol, Rey Bautista and Z Gorres.

Banal and Allanic, together with Rey Caitom, Milan Melindo, Frank Albia, Lito Jalnaiz and Mark Jason Melliguen will headline the “Stars of the Future” on April 30 in Tagbilaran City.

The fight, which is part of the city’s pre-fiesta celebration, is another Sammy Gello-ani promotion in cooperation with the City Government of Tagbilaran.

Banal (5-0-1, 4 KOs), who is fresh off his first-round demolition of Thai Dechapol Bankluaygyum, will fight Bangsaen Sithproprom, while Allanic (11-1, 4 KOs) will trade punches with Saensak Singmanassak, the same fighter who lost to Bautista in their the WBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight title fight on Aug. 17 2004.

Bansaen had also fought Gerry Peñalosa for the WBF 115-pound title in November 2004 in Parañaque and got knocked out in the seventh round.

Since losing to Bautista, Saensak (11-13-2, 6 KOs) fought 14 times, winning seven times, losing five and drawing twice, while Bangsaen (5-1, 3KOs) fared better after the loss to Peñalosa, scoring two KO wins.

On the other hand, Caitom will fight Roel Honor of Butuan City, while Melindo, a two-time Palarong Pambansa gold medal winner, will fight Amirro Ricablanca of Davao City.

Jalnaiz, Albia and Melliguen, three former members of the Philippine amateur boxing team are also expected to spice up the under card.

Jalnaiz and Albia, who are both two-time National Youth Open Gold medal winners and silver medallists of the 2001 Arafura Games in Australia made auspicious debuts last March 18, while Melliguen, who is a 2003 and 2005 Southeast Asian Games campaigner will make his professional debut. RCM
