Moises and Mendez: Alive By Darwin John Moises and Michelle Mendez Singles talk
Darwin: The world these days seem to be more complicated compared to that of our early years when we had our earliest field trips into our sticky social web. I do sound crazy at times but Easter is meaningful to me. I happen to have a fast and furious pace for months now and my head almost turned 360 degrees like a character in the movie Exorcist. The Holy Week allowed me to a have a change in perspective, a detour from the mainstream flow of things in order to get in touch with what is real. The experience made me see things from the spirit and not from the mind where logic is formed. There is always a need to switch a few things off once in a while to make one feel alive again!
M: Happy Easter! I always think of Easter as a season of second chances. Lent is when we think about where we have failed, strive to improve on the areas that we need to work on and ask for the grace to be able to conquer our weaknesses. If Lent is purification and mortification, Easter is a season of joy. We are given the chance to “live” again after dying to ourselves because Someone gave His life for us to save us from our sins. We realize that we have so many blessings when we think that we have gone through a good Friday to be victorious on the day of Easter.
D: There’s always the tendency to equate one’s success with one’s liquidity. Money often is a common table topic these days --- the lack of it, the obscenity of it, who makes what, who has it, who doesn’t, whether I like to invest or what am I worth and it’s not in its existential sense! I can only heave a sigh and roll my eyes. Money is not always the ticket to paradise. I’ve met people who seem to have so little but are pretty much contented with life. And achievements can’t always make our pulse beat as though we’re getting a blood transfusion. Like the spelling bee I won in grade school, an achievement normally has a shelf-life of only one year. Now, only my mom remembers that. Haha! Indeed, happy are those who found their guiding purpose, who have chosen the right purpose which is worth giving their whole lives to.
M: It’s funny how we now talk about contentment and achievement. If you think about it, not all things that we achieve make us content. If one was to think of the victory of Christ over death, they would probably think “well, that was a great achievement” and the thought that someone sacrificed his life for us should make us content with what we have. After all, we cannot have everything in this world. But no! We sometimes think that we should have more and be entitled to more and we do not stop until we satiate ourselves with our wants.... only to find out that we don’t need it at all. Crazy huh?! Just like our meandering conversation today! haha!
D: I was young once (I’m almost in tears now, okay?) and I can still recall a glimpse of the passionate fervor infused into my each and every ambition. I was so very hyperactive and caffeine-addicted. Now these are slowly clearing my memory space without even the help of gin or tonic. Eventually I realized happiness comes from not having it all but in reaching a point of contentment. Life becomes easier when we know what we want and we understand what we do not need. Yeah there are more things to learn, to do, to teach every day. But once in a while, it’s cool to pause, to shut out the noise and just enjoy the silence. While there are a lot of things to explore, in the end we will still know our paradise is just our own personal stretch.
M: Happiness is being grateful with what we have and learning to be content . We think of Easter as a source of great joy because we are “alive” again. But we shouldn’t forget that we all go through a Good Friday experience before we have our Easter joy. So it is with life. There are ups and downs and nothing is ever certain. What is certain is that as long as we are alive in this world, we should live as if it were our last and make the most of our lives by giving glory to the one who gave us life.
