RAFI launches Lantugi: a debate for the youth
THE Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (Rafi) has launched the community-based debate for the youth in Cebu City.
This is being done in cooperation with the University of San Carlos (USC) Political Science Department, Cebu City Federation of Sangguniang Kabataan, Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Cebu City Chapter, Timawa Adventure Leadership Inc., Cebu TV Channel 28, and Smash FM.
Dubbed as “Lantugi,” the series of debate tournaments using the vernacular and held in the barangays, aims to develop critical thinking among the youth. Going beyond the exercise of debate, Lantugi not only brings issues closer to communities, but engages the youth as well in addressing their communities’ needs and concerns. The champion and the runner-up teams have to come up with community projects using the cash prize Rafi sets for that component of the tournament.
Fourteen teams, each team composed of 15-21 years old from the same barangay, signed in the tournament. Brgys. Tisa, Sto. Nino, Binaliw, Talamban, Punta Princesa, Sirao, Kasambagan, Parian, Adlaon, Lahug, Tuong, Paril, Lusaran and Brgy. Luz are the teams to compete in the nine-week seriesof debates which started April 7 and will continue up to June this year.
Training
Part of the Lantugi is the series of trainings to equip participants with the skills in public speaking, argumentation and debate, and project planning and development.
Atty. Archill Capistrano of the USC Political Science Department conducted the two-day training on argumentation and debate last March 18-19. A situationer on the youth was given by Llewelyn Menchaves, SK president of Lahug.
Debate proper
Barangay Tisa and. Brgy. Sto. Nino; Brgy. Sirao and. Brgy. Pari-an, competed on April 7 and last April 8, Brgy. Kasambagan vied against Brgy. Punta Princesa, followed by Brgy. Talamban vs. Brgy. Binaliw.
Other schedules are on April 28, Lahug vs. Adlaon; Tuong vs. Paril and April 29, Saturday, Lusaran vs. Barrio Luz. Semi-final and championship rounds will commence in May until June.
The teams who will make it as semi-finalists will receive P 5,000 each.
The second runner up will receive P 20, 000 cash prize for the team and a grant worth P20,000 for their respective barangay’s community project.
The champion team will receive P 30,000 cash prize and a grant worth P60,000 for community project.
Partners
The USC Political Science Department provides the debat mechanics for the Modified Oxford-Oregon debate format and conducts the training on argumentation and debate, USC PolSci Department also provides student-coaches for each of the debating teams; IBP-Cebu will provide the pool of judges; the SK Federation organizes the teams and the venues; Timawa assists in the project management, while Cebu TV Channel 28 and Smash FM provide the media exposures for the Lantugi.
Through the Lantugi, Rafi and partners hope to involve more youth in discussing and finding solutions to issues that confront them and their communities.
