Death mars city’s Holy Week

A HABAL-HABAL driver was killed by two men, one of whom was carrying a handgun, along the Good Shepherd Road in Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City last Maundy Thursday.

The victim was identified as Benjie Camingawan, alias Jojo, 23.

Earlier that day, Al Destura, 49, a resident of Barangay Camputhaw, Cebu City, landed at the Chong Hua Hospital for gunshot wounds in the upper body and a graze in the face.

In Bantayan Island, a thief tried to victimize one of the vacationers but the vigilance of a member of a civilian volunteer group foiled the incident.

Other than that and reports of at least five people who fainted while watching the live presentation of “Buhing Kalbaryo” in Barangay Guadalupe in Cebu City, officials from the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) and Cebu Provincial Police Office (CPPO) said Lenten holidays were “very peaceful.”

According to the initial investigation of the homicide team led by SPO3 Alex Dacua, Camingawan, who was driving his motorcycle-for-hire, was waiting for passengers in the area when the two men arrived.

One of them pulled out a gun and shot Camingawan.

Grudge

The perpetrators fled to the hills, while Camingawan was rushed to the Cebu City Medical Center.

He died on the way to hospital.

At 12:15 a.m., an armed man and his two cohorts shot Destura in Lower Purok 3, Barangay Camputhaw.

Destura, interviewed by a team of homicide investigators led by SPO3 Zenaido Pastorfide Jr. identified the gunman as Erwin Beldad and his alleged companions as Jojo Florita and Jimmy Arda.

The three suspects are Destura’s neighbors.

Destura said they have been harboring a grudge against him. They suspect he was the one who reported to police their alleged involvement in the illegal drug trade.

Last Friday, four women and one man fainted while watching the presentation of the “Buhing Kalbaryo” in front of the Guadalupe Church.

They were part of a crowd estimated at 20,000, who braved the sun to catch a glimpse of Gilbert Bargayo’s 15th crucifixion, said CCPO Acting Director Melvin Gayotin.

Medical assistance was immediately applied to the five persons, as paramedics were placed on standby in different areas around the church.

Petty thieves also failed to prey on the crowd, Gayotin said, because of the presence of one company from the Regional Mobile Group, policemen from the Guadalupe Police Station and civilian volunteer groups.

Gayotin and CPPO Director Vicente Loot hope that the peaceful celebration of the Lenten holidays will continue until today, Easter Sunday, when the Roman Catholic faithful are expected to come to church very early morning to witness the reenactment of a holy encounter, that of Jesus Christ and His mother, Mary.
