Ports, terminals report ‘zero crime’ on holidays

HOLY Week unfolded peacefully for travelers, Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) 7 Director Glenn G. Cabañez said.

Cabañez is chairman of the Regional Management Council (RMC) 7 that put up “help desks” in Cebu’s bus terminals, ports and airports.

RMC 7 is composed of Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) agencies such as the Marina, the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA), the Philippine Coast Guard, the Air Transportation Office, the Cebu Port Authority, the Philippine Ports Authority, the Land Transportation Office, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, the and National Telecommunications Commission.

They are also assisted by the PNP Traffic Management Group.

MCIAA General Manager Adelberto F. Yap said that what contributed to the “zero crime rate” during Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Black Saturday at the Mactan airport was effective planning and preparation.

Newly trained members of Special Weapons and Tactics team were deployed to restricted areas at the airport.

Yap said MCIAA has been strictly implementing rules set by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

He observed that local tourist arrivals increased after MCIAA allowed Sea Air and Asian Spirit to add section flights to destinations like Boracay and Bantayan Island.

Cebu Pacific was also granted additional flights for the Cebu-Manila route to connect flights to Manila.

The additional flights raised revenues for MCIAA from terminal fees and landing charges.

LTO 7 Director Alex Leyson said there was no untoward incident in the land transport sector, probably because bus and jeepney operators had been properly informed of the heavy penalties they would suffer if they break the rules.

The LTO 7 is the lead agency in manning Help Desks at the Cebu South Bus Terminal and the Cebu North Bus Terminal. (EOB)
