Transport leader yields coop post, but vows to watch LTFRB

EVEN if he’s no longer chairman of a transport cooperative, Steve Cañas vowed to continue exposing fake franchises allegedly issued by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) 7.

Yielding to pressure from LTFRB, which he said has refused applications from the Visayas United Drivers Transport Services and Multi-purpose Cooperative (Vudtrasco) unless he resigns as chairman, Cañas left his post Sunday last week.

He refused reelection during the Vudtrasco general assembly, so his fellow members would not suffer, he said.

“Goryo-goryohon ra man nila gihapon ang mga opisyales sa Vudtrasco. Dili dawaton ang among mga dokumento kay overstaying na kuno mi. Dawat ko ana pero ang mga myembro man ang magbuot dili ang LTFRB kung gusto pa ba nila ako maoy chairman (It’s the members who should decide, not the LTFRB, if they still want me to be chairman),” he said.

He particularly pointed at LTFRB 7 legal counsel Douglas Sanson as the one who bore grudges against him. He said they had no problem with Director Rogelio Osmeña, who has been treating them professionally.

So as not to jeopardize the whole cooperative, he resigned. In last week’s Vudtrasco general assembly, seven new board members were elected. They will chose among themselves who will sit as chairman.

Cañas, however, said he will continue fighting those behind fake franchises.

Sen. Alfredo Lim has answered his request to have the matter investigated by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) after Lim’s chief of staff, through a letter dated March 1, 2006, asked the NBI national office for updates on an earlier request.

Cañas said the NBI may have set aside the request temporarily because it was addressed to former director Reynaldo Wycoco, who recently died of a heart attack. (RHM)
