Chiongbian: The Easter bunny and ‘golfing’ at 2 a.m. By Edgar R. Chiongbian Teetime
HAPPY Easter to you all! Was the Easter bunny good to you? Okay, how many eggs did you get? Two eggs sunny side up? Wrong answer, it has to be of the colored variety or it doesn’t count.
Aside from the other religious things associated with Easter, today is also supposed to be a dress-up day, which is something like your birthday. So if you haven’t gone to church, get you r best garb on, wear it to church and then go for a nice lunch in a restaurant. If it is too late, maybe you can do it next year and make it a tradition.
UNIQUE FORMAT. If you’re up to doing something different in golf, go to the Cebu Country Club today and join one of its two traditional Easter golf tournaments -- the 4 Clubs and the Hit and Giggle competitions. In the 4 Clubs tournament, you are only allowed to use four clubs, including the putter, instead of the usual 14. To make it official, you must carry only the four clubs you selected and leave the rest of your clubs in your bag. If you haven’t played this tournament, you should give it a try and you will find that you don’t really need to use all the clubs in your bag. What is remarkable is that many golfers I know actually come in with better-than-usual scores. There is no decision-making to do, just keep hitting until you get the ball on the green.
The other tournament is the Hit & Giggle, a team play of one male and one female golfer. The teams used to be composed mostly of husbands and wives, fathers and daughters or mothers and sons, but very few “related golfers” are doing it now, maybe because of the stress involved. A poor performance can easily bring the game to the house and that could be a very unhappy situation. So now, many choose other partners to insure a sweet homecoming. The format of the competition allows both players to hit their drives and then after selecting the best ball, the shots alternate between the partners until the ball is holed out. Then it starts all over again on the next hole.
And not to be outdone, the ladies chapter of CCC will also have a ournament similar to the 4 Clubs on April 19. But, they will use the 5 clubs-format, meaning five clubs, including the putter, will be used for play. We will see how the ladies do with this format and compare the results to the men’s tournament.
For you tournament-seeking golfers, there is a golf tournament on April 20 at Club Filipino in Danao sponsored by Pagcor. It promises to be a good one with lots of prizes. The awarding will be at Teatro Casino. And for the seniors, the Federation of Philippine Senior Golfer’s will have a tournament on April 22 at the Mercedes Plantation golf course in Bogo. Both these tournaments may mean a long drive, but they’re definitely worth every kilometer.
Did you hear the story of Boy, the golfer who came home late one night and got his wife so upset? Boy’s wife asked him, “What’s your excuse for coming home at this time of the night?” He said, “Golfing with friends, my dear.” The wife said harshly, “What? At 2 a.m?!” Boy replied, “Ah, yes... we used night clubs.” This story I dedicate to all the boys in the golf course who will desperately use this line of reasoning.
GOLF TIP. If you have not found a successful routine for short downhill putts, you can try this one. First thing is to have a very positive attitude that you will sink the putt. Then, make a stroke or two to determine the speed you want for the putt.
Set your stance so the distance of your feet matches the length of your putting stroke with the ball played in the middle. Pick a spot to roll the ball over. Keep a light grip pressure on the putter and swing the putter back to your right foot and through your left. This will help prevent you from steering or guiding the ball.
