517 scholars make task force proud

WITH the help of the different agencies working with the Cebu City Task Force for Street Children, a total of 517 urban poor scholars graduated this year.

Six of them graduated with honors in elementary and high school, including a valedictorian, while two others are cum laude graduates.

At the awarding ceremony last Monday, Task Force chairman and First Lady Margot Osmeña expressed how proud she was of the urban poor students who attended different public and private schools in the city.

The children are under the care of 22 different government agencies, non-government organizations (NGOs), orphanages and other institutions that are members of the task force.

Fruits

“You have reaped the fruits of your labor and we’re proud of you. When we started this program, we never expected that time will come when we will have 517 graduates,” Osmeña told the graduates during the recognition and awarding ceremony at the Metro Cebu Water District (MCWD) auditorium.

Of the 517 scholars who graduated last month, 269 graduated from elementary, 158 graduated from high school and 69 others graduated from college.

“At first, we were hesitant that you will qualify in college and you proved us wrong. We are very proud of you and hopefully, in time, you will also help those who will be needing your help,” Osmeña added.

Beneficiaries

Flora May Pulgar and Juvinal Taboada finished BS Hotel and Restaurant Technology at the Cebu State College of Science and Technology. Both were beneficiaries of Lihok Filipina’s PGMA Scholarship Fund.

The two elementary students who graduated with honors are under the care of Nazareth Children’s Center. The high school honor students are from ACG Foundation Inc., Dangpanan Children’s Center and Share-A-Child Movement.

For the last school year alone, some 2,500 street and urban poor children staying in various institutions were enrolled in public and private schools. (LCR)
