Marine eng’g scholarships offered to OFW dependents
WITH the increase in the need for marine engineers abroad, the government is offering a scholarship for dependents of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) so they could work as marine engineers in other parts of the world.
Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (Owwa) 7 Welfare Officer Rey Jacalan said the program is intended for mechanical engineers, who want to become marine engineers to have better employment opportunities abroad.
The scholars who could avail themselves of the program will get free tuition, training fees and room accommodation.
The training will be held at the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific in Mariveles, Bataan.
Jacalan said the bridging course for marine engineers will allow the scholars to acquire a diploma in six to eight months, which is shorter compared to enrolling under a regular school program in a college or university.
However, after completing the course, they will have to undergo a four-month on-board training.
Inquiry
Jacalan revealed that some mechanical engineering students from a Cebu City university inquired about the program.
However, only dependents or unmarried siblings of active OFWs below 30 years old are qualified.
According to Philippine Overseas Employment Administration 7 records, some 339 workers left to work as seafarers abroad last year.
There was an increase in the deployment of seafarers in 2004, when 215 were recorded.
Nationwide figures reached 302,328 last year, up from the 291,516 in 2004.
Documents
The applicants have to bring an official receipt for the OFW’s latest Owwa contribution and a certificate of Owwa membership coverage.
As proof of the relationship, the child of an OFW has to bring his birth certificate.
The sibling has to bring his birth certificate and that of his OFW sibling.
The applicant also needs to bring either a diploma, mechanical engineer license of transcript of records.
The scholarship program is an addition to Owwa’s Education for Development Scholarship Program, which is also intended for dependents of OFWs.
They could enroll in any four-year or five-year college degree course at any college or university with Commission on Higher Education accreditation. (CYR)
