P300T worth of lumber seized

TASK Force Sagip Kalikasan of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Maritime police seized a smuggled lawaan lumber in a private container yard in Barangay Maguikay, Mandaue City yesterday.

The cargo is said to be worth not less than P300,000 and is part of the four undocumented 40-footer container vans shipped from Cagayan de Oro to Cebu sometime in March.

Missing vans

Maritime Police chief Supt. Reynaldo Esguerra said the Cebu Coast Guard is now helping them trace the other three missing vans that may also contain smuggled lumber.

Although the cargo consignee is not yet known, the DENR and the Maritime Police confirmed that the shipment was brought by a cargo vessel of the National Marine Corp. Shipping Lines and has been at the private container yard of a certain Cesar Salimbangon.

The container van was about to be removed from the yard at past 12 p.m. yesterday, supposedly to be delivered to its consignee, when the DENR and Maritime operatives arrived. They had been tipped of the pull out.

“A release of the container van on Sunday was itself irregular so we have the authority to hold it, Esguerra said.

He said whoever is in charge of securing the vans has a lot of explaining to do, or he will be tagged as in connivance with the culprits.

Hold order

Senior Insp. Roger Mangaoang, the team leader of Maritime Police that assisted the DENR, said task force chief Romeo Cal immediately issued a hold order for the van after it was known that it had no document.

He said the container van was brought to DENR’s impounding area at Pier 3 and was opened.

“Upat ni ka container van ang niabot sa Cebu. It is possible nga nadawat na sa consignee ang tulo, but we will still have to try to trace them with the help of the Cebu Coast Guard,” he said.

He said the task force will try to find the missing three container vans in other private yards in Cebu and Mandaue cities. (AIV)
