Ban on poultry ‘no effect’ on RP fowl growers - DA
The ban on poultry and poultry products exported by the Philippines to Bangladesh has no effect on the country’s fowl growers, a government official said yesterday.
This is because the country has not been exporting poultry and poultry goods for some time, said Department of Agriculture (DA) 7 National Meat Inspection Service director Romeo Capa.
He said the country exported 1.67 million kilos of chicken in 2004 to Japan and Hong Kong. He added that San Miguel Foods Inc.’s Magnolia Poultry Processing Plant and Swift Foods Inc. were among the exporters. More countries
Bangladesh has expanded the coverage of its import ban on poultry and poultry products to seven countries, including the Philippines, as a precaution against avian flu.
To date, Bangladesh has banned poultry shipments from a total of 56 countries.
But Capa said he finds the decision “confusing.”
“I don’t understand why they have to include us because, as of now, the country is still avian flu-free,” he told Sun.Star Cebu in an interview.
Countries newly added to the ban are the United Kingdom, the Philippines, Georgia, Burkina Faso, the Czech Republic, Palestine and Israel.
In a separate interview, Swift Foods Inc. production manager for Cebu Armand Benabaye said Swift ceased exporting because Japan stopped buying due to the bird flu scare.
“But we continue to have marketing efforts to find export market for our poultry products,” he said. (ALC)
