6,000 delegates attend Cviraa opening; Palaro-bound athletes known tomorrow By Jade S. Violeta Sun.Star Staff Reporter
The 2006 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) meet opened yesterday with close to 6,000 delegates at the CPG Sports Complex in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.
Department of Education (DepEd) undersecretaries Fe Hidalgo and Ramon Bacani attended the ceremony as guests of honor along with DepEd 7 Director Carolino Mordeno, Bohol Gov. Erico B. Aumentado, Tagbilaran Mayor Dan Neri Lim and attended by Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn F. Garcia.
Physical Education on School Sports (Pess)-7 chief Vivian Giñete said that after the opening ceremony the athletes were scheduled to be treated to a welcome dinner hosted by Tagbilaran City and the Province of Bohol.
Competitions will formally start today, while the the Miss Cviraa pageant will be held at 7 p.m.
The dancesport competition will be held tomorrow along with the selection of the athletes who will represent Region 7 in the Palaro, which is slated on May 7-13.
Financial support
Giñete said they have to select the composition of the Region 7 delegation for the Palaro even before the conclusion of the regional meet due to time constraints.
Giñete said they are already preparing letters to the different mayors and congressmen of the region to ask for financial assistance as the national office allocated only P2.6 million for the region.
The P2.6 million, Giñete said, will not be enough as this will only cover the athletes’ fare to Naga City, uniforms, food and other miscellaneous expenses.
The Region 7 delegation will be billeted at the Camarines Sur National High School Extension in Naga City and Giñete said the billeting center is near the playing venues such as the University of Nueva Caceres and the Ateneo de Naga University.
She also said that Mordeno has already instructed some officials to check on the venues and install temporary bathrooms at the billeting centers.
Cebu City, which is gunning for its 12th championship, leads the participants of the Cviraa meet. Other participants are Cebu Province, Danao City, Mandaue City, Lapulapu City, Talisay City, Toledo City, Oriental Negros, Dumaguete City, Bais City, Bayawan City, Tanjay City, Siquijor Province, Bohol and Tagbilaran City.
