Seag gold medalist to debut in Tagbilaran professional boxing

Southeast Asian Games (Seag) silver medalist Mark Jason Melliguen will make his professional ring debut in the undercard of the SGG Sports Promotion’s “Carpark Boxing at Island City Mall” on April 30 at the Island City Mall car park in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

Melliguen, who lost to Non Boojumnong of Thailand for the gold medal in the 64.5kg (welterweight) division of the recent 23rd Seag boxing competition in Bacolod City, will fight Cebu’s Rolan Malunhao, who is also making his professional ring debut.

The main event will feature ALA Boy Robert Allanic, the RP No.1 flyweight contender, who will take his first foreign opponent, Saensak Singmanassak of Thailand, for 10 rounds.

Chance to shine

Co-main event is the fast rising AJ Banal, who is of Boholano descent, against Thai fighter Bansaen Sithpraprom. Banal is coming off a first-round knockout win over Thai Dechapol Bankluaygym last March 18 at the Mandaue City Sports Complex.

“We are giving a chance to these young boxers to shine. They could become world contenders in the near future,” said Tagbilaran City Mayor Dan Neri Lim.

For his part, promoter Sammy Gello-ani commended the Boholano hosts for staging the card.

“We couldn’t have done this without Mayor Lim, who has continuously been supportive of boxing and the boxers,” said Gello-ani.

RP team

Completing the fight card are former amateur gold medalist Rey Caitom and two-time Palarong Pambansa gold medalist Milan Melindo, who will face Roldan Malinao and Amirro Ricablanca, respectively.

Former Philippine boxing team members Frank Albia and Lito Jalnaiz will also showcase their boxing skills in the undercard.

Albia, a two-time national youth open gold medalist and Arafura Games silver medallist, will fight Brix “Bom” Ray of Davao City, while Jalnaiz will face Jessie Albaracin.

The supporting bouts will feature Rasheid Bacus, AEV Stable’s Rex Malibago and Rogen Flores, who will go up against Argie Marapao, Daryl Amoncio and Rey Taguibalos, respectively.

Solar Sports will also make its first television coverage of an SGG boxing card. (RCM)
