Sirlitz ’95 scores victory in USC alumni hoops

Sirlitz ’95 logged its first win after trampling over the younger Jyrene ’98 in overtime, 93-87, in the newly opened San Carlos Boys High Alumni Basketball Association-The Atan Guardo Cup Monday night at the USC-BHS Gym.

Sirlitz’s stonewall defense gave the team the victory after holding down Batch ’98 to only eight points in the extension period.

Dodge Bugtai and Paul Mata combined for 37 points and grabbing eight and five rebounds, respectively, while providing the muscle inside the paint that gave Jyrene ‘98 key player Boy Cortez a tough time hitting his short-range jumpers.

Defense

The combined defensive efforts of Christian Noval, Christian Solon and Dong Boquia prevented Batch ’98 from scoring in the last 17 seconds of the game after Batch ’95 tied the score at 76-all courtesy of a layup by Bugtai.

Noval, who topscored with 20 points, sparked Batch ‘95’s late-game comeback after the team played catch-up in the first two quarters.

Noval found his range in the third quarter with a five-of-nine clip from the field that gave Sirlitz a three-point lead, 59-56.

Jyrene ’98 started strong with Cortes and Dong Zamora at the scoring forefront, draining uncontested fastbreak points that gave Batch ’98 to as many as an 11-point edge in the first quarter.

Other game

Sirlitz, however, displayed good ball movement as it slowly crawled back into the game, giving huge defensive problems to Batch ’98.

In the other match, ex-PBA stalwart Paul Abais displayed another impeccable game with 35 points to slaughter guest team CEC ’60s, 94-75, in the first game.

Ho Tong Hardware ‘70s (94) – Abais 35, Gacayan 14, Villaroza 12, Medina 10, Monterroyo 9, Rebullido 8, Gomos 4, Moriles 2. CEC ’60s (75) – Ang 21, Benedict 15, Jumawan 13, A. Lim 9, Go 6, B. Lim 6, Ordes 5.

Sirlitz ’95 (93) – Noval 20, Bugtai 19, Mata 18, Solon 10, Boquia 10, Belandres 6, Olano 5, Cenas 5. Jyrene ’98 (87) – Cortez 23, Zamora 15, Pasiculan 14, Maxilom 12, Dumaboc 9, Jagupit 6, Matunog 5, Alcordo 2, Toledo 1.
