Cebu tops other provinces in CV in meat yield, produces 13M kilos

Cebu province was the biggest meat producer in the region in the first quarter of this year.

The entire province produced 13.17 million kilos of meat, or 84 percent of the total volume of 15.67 million kilos of Central Visayas’ meat production from January to March.

Negros Oriental followed with over 1.7 million kilos, Bohol with 732,293 kilos and Siquijor with 43,833 kilos, according to the Regional Quarterly Accomplishment Report of Department of Agriculture (DA) 7 National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS), a copy of which was furnished to Sun.Star Cebu.

Popular pork

Among the types of meat produced in the region, pork was the most popular.

The region’s pork yield reached a total of 10.2 million kilos, or 63.55 percent of the total dressed weight produced during the quarter. Dressed chicken came next with 3.46 million kilos, beef with 1.8 million kilos, horse meat with 246,934 kilos, carabeef with 230,635 kilos and chevon (goat meat) with 123,349 kilos.

The DA 7 revealed, however, that a total of 11,214 kilograms of meat was “condemned” during meat inspections. The discarded meat caused livestock raisers to lose over P1 million based on current prices of meat, it said.

The DA 7 also reported a total income of P602,178 from the collection of ante-mortem and post-mortem fees, imported meat inspection fees and accreditation fees, among others.

NMIS 7 also said there were eight importers in the region that brought in meat from India, Australia, Germany, Canada, Spain, France, Denmark, Ireland and the United States.

Meat importation reached 2,197.532 metric tons. Most of the imported meat was buffalo meat with 1,191.880 metric tons followed by pork at 786.500 metric tons, beef at 139.810 metric tons, poultry at 77.592 metric tons and other kinds of meat at 1.750 metric tons. (ALC)
