CBM ’06 to tackle film biz

The Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), through the Cebu Business Month 2006, will begin to hone one of Cebu’s potential yet still underdeveloped industry—film and entertainment.

The film and entertainment industry will be the subject of a panel discussion during the Cebu Business Month (CBM) Tourism Congress on June 22, said CCCI tourism congress chair and executive director of the Cebu Visitors and Convention Bureau (CVCB) Mila Espina.

The discussion, dubbed “Film Industry and Entertainment, Cebu’s Best Bet!,” will have as resource speaker an executive of Bigfoot Global Solutions Inc. The speaker will talk about the potentials and limitations of Cebu’s film and entertainment industry.

Bigfoot is the parent firm of Bigfoot Productions, Bigfoot Production Services, International Academy of Film and Television, Bigfoot Partners and Bigfoot Sound Works.

Attraction

Cebu’s film and entertainment industry can be developed into a tourist attraction, said Espina.

She said Cebuanos are very talented, as manifested by the success of Cebuano singers like Anna Fegi, Jimmy Marquez and Raki Vega. Cebuanos like Vina Morales, Dulce, Caridad Sanchez and Manilyn Reynes have also conquered the big screen.

Sun.Star Cebu columnist Sam Costanilla said the local entertainment industry have had several problems.

“The local film industry enjoyed tremendous popularity in the ‘70s despite the fact that what were shown then were black-and-white flicks. The audience did not mind watching those movies. However, the local film business eventually faded and there is no telling yet as to when it will be revived, if ever,” he said.

Ignacio “Boy” Mendoza, president of Sugbu Films Philippines Inc., echoed Costanilla’s statement, saying his company has experienced difficulties convincing companies to support local productions. (JBN)
