2 remain missing at sea

The Cebu Coast Guard took back its earlier report that radio operator of mv Michael 1 Romeo Sangcap had been found in the waters off Barangay Catarman in Liloan town last Thursday morning, or hours after the motorboat that he and seven other crewmembers were riding capsized.

Petty Officer 3 Ferdinand Manto clarified last night that since Thursday’s search and retrieval operation by their frogmen, Sangcap and ship captain Rodulfo Samillano, 60, remain missing.

He said their headquarters received the wrong information from a certain Tugonon, the shipping firm’s port captain.

“Capt. Tugonon was radioed by the cargo ship’s chief mate that Sangcap has already been found, and that wrong information even reached our headquarters in Manila,” Manto told Sun.Star Cebu in a phone interview.

The eight crewmembers disembarked from their vessel anchored 250 yards off Sitio Suba, Poblacion and took a light craft upon Samillano’s invitation to relax in his house while waiting for their schedule to depart for Batangas. Samillano is a resident of Barangay Poblacion.

On their way back to their vessel past 11 p.m. Wednesday, strong winds and big waves battered their motorboat, causing it to capsize.

Five of the crew managed to swim ashore, while Quarter Master Benjie Bulala was found dead by local fishermen at 2 a.m. (AIV)
