Labella asks DOH to check water bottles

Worried about the health hazards of the repeated use of mineral water bottles, a Cebu City councilor is asking the Department of Health (DOH) to conduct a research to find out whether it is harmful to humans.

Councilor Edgardo Labella wants DOH to check a newspaper report about a science professor who warned against the dangers of plastic containers, if used more than once.

Plastic containers are said to contain potentially toxic substances or carcinogenic elements known as diethylhydroxylamine.

Cancer

The report said the repeated washing and rinsing of a plastic container can cause the breakdown of its components, and the cancer causing elements can leak into the liquid substance it holds.

In a proposed resolution, Labella said the report should be checked since mineral water containers in the country do not have product information on its chemical composition as well as directions for use.

“It is in the interest of public health and safety for concerned government agencies to determine the veracity of the report since most, if not all consumers tend to reuse empty mineral water bottles or other containers of liquid substances,” he said.

Research

Labella proposed a measure urging DOH to immediately undertake a research about the report that the reuse of mineral water plastic containers is dangerous to human health, in order to promote and protect public health and safety.

He specifically asked the Bureau of Food and Drugs of DOH to look into the reusability of plastic containers through research in coordination with other government agencies and business companies closely associated with plastic products.

“Undeniably, a research-based finding on this important matter will infer the proper guidance of consumers, businesses industries and other sectors concerned about these commodities,” the councilor added. (LCR)
