PIIB files 4 murder cases vs. 90 ‘rebels’ in 2 north towns
The Provincial Intelligence and Investigation Branch (PIIB) filed four murder cases against more than 90 suspected communist rebels for the encounters in Barangay Sumon, Tabuelan last year and Barangay Dalid, Tuburan last March.
PIIB Chief, Supt. Juanito Enguerra, told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday that the 90 men and women were identified through documents they seized from slain rebel Jerry Badayos during the Dalid encounter on March 19.
Members of the Philippine Army’s 78th Infantry Battalion (IB) also claimed that the more than 90 rebels were in their order of battle and have already been identified in countless operations.
Badayos, alleged Front 2 secretary of the New People’s Army Central Visayas Regional Party Committee, was slain alongside Guillermo Alburo.
Respondents
Police filed the cases last Wednesday before the Cebu Provincial Prosecutor’s Office.
More than 90 suspected rebels were named respondents in three counts of murder for the Sumon encounter last Oct. 15.
In that encounter, Sgt. Orlando Luna, Cpl. Bobby Oscar Licono and Pfc. Joseph Bingil were killed while Pfc. Roger Dagundon survived.
Dagundon, Pfc. Antolino Merayo and Cpl. Renante Tirado issued a joint affidavit in the complaint.
It was market day in Barangay Sumon when around 15 persons who had been mingling with the soldiers suddenly attacked.
The rebels took off with five M14 rifles, three M16 rifles and bags of ammunition from the detachment, which was located near the barangay hall.
The same rebels were identified as the ones present in Barangay Dalid and face one more murder case for the death of Pfc. Rey Venturanza.
A joint police and military team conducted operations in the mountains of Tabuelan after receiving reports of the presence of several rebels in the area.
The operations led to an encounter between rebels and soldiers.
Enguerra said that Camp Crame recently sent a directive to all lower units instructing them to investigate and then file cases against suspected rebels who attack military and police. (MEA)
