DST to spare business, residents power costs
Implementing daylight saving time (DST) will allow the country to save millions of pesos in energy consumption, an official of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) said.
PCCI-Visayas governor Robert Go said the National Government’s proposed adoption of DST to cut fuel consumption is “laudable.”
“We should have been doing this for a long time. I’ve already called and lobbied for this long time ago. This is a standard practice by developed countries,” he said in an interview yesterday.
Early
Under the DST scheme, standard time will be moved one hour earlier to save energy by making use of the daylight, he explained.
“One hour (worth) of energy saved would translate to millions of pesos in savings. People don’t realize the value of it yet. It’s already bright outside after five in the morning, but many are still asleep and won’t start working until around eight,” he said.
Cebu Power Core Group chairman Carlos Co and Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Eric Mendoza said imposing DST will help both government agencies and private business firms save energy.
“Initially, people will have to adjust. We will have to wake up one hour earlier to catch up with the change of time. But it should be okay and not much of a sacrifice,” Co said.
Mendoza said the cost of power will continue to increase due to rising price of oil in the global market, so DST will also cut energy consumption costs of businesses.
Bright idea
Italiani Associati Cebu president Walter Finzi de Vita who is engaged in furniture export said applying DST in the country is a “bright idea.”
“We do it in Europe, why not here? I am very positive about this. It’s not just businesses like ours that will benefit but the whole country as well,” he said in a separate interview.
Go stressed that with or without the global oil crisis, people should adopt DST and other energy saving measures.
“We shouldn’t wait for events like oil price hike for us to think of saving. It should be a normal way for us,” he said. (ALC)
