Jewelers down Traders
Red-hot Stephen Padilla saved the day for the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City as the former Alaska Aces guard scored 13 of the Jewelers’ 22 points in the final period in a repeat win over the youthful MLSDF-Mantawi Traders, 72-65, Tuesday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
The win gave Cebu City the top spot in the Visayas division of the Mindanao-Visayas Basketball Association First Conference.
Four treys
Padilla’s four timely triples in the final period were all it took to break the spirits of the Traders, who were in control of the game despite the limited playing time of their twin-towers, Randy Sevilla and Rino Berami, who were in foul trouble as early as the first quarter.
The second unit of coach Eddie Ybañez held its ground, keeping the veteran-laden Jewelers at bay with a 15-9 lead after the first quarter.
The Jewelers rallied in the second quarter and took a 37-36 lead behind the efforts of Mike Manigo, Woodrow Enriquez, Jayford Rodriguez and Enrico John Llanto.
The Traders traded baskets and erected a 57-53 lead after Arnel Lozano and Miguelito Ducay scored a triple each at the 7:36 mark of the fourth quarter.
Padilla sparked a 10-0 run to put the Cebu City Jewelers ahead, 63-57, with 5:01 left.
Mantawi tried to put up another run but Padilla sank another triple at the 2:20 mark and Danny Aying converted two free throws 23 seconds later that secured the win for the Jewelers.
