Tom wants mountain brys. excluded from Asean holidays
Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña is asking that the city’s mountain barangays be excluded from the declaration of a four-day holiday for the Asean summit this December.
He wants classes in the city’s 30 mountain barangays to continue during the holidays to discourage people there from going downtown.
Osmeña spoke with President Arroyo, who visited Cebu yesterday, to relay his wish. Arroyo’s response was not immediately known.
Wish
Also, the mayor will allocate funds for the mountain barangays to hold festivals to entice residents to stay instead of going to the urban areas to shop because of the holidays.
“I will talk to her. I would like to reverse myself in the classes of the mountain barangays,” he said.
The move is part of his wish to keep Cebuanos away from Cebu City to better secure delegates and foreign ministers attending the summit.
He recently visited barangays to tap the help of the community in terms of intelligence gathering and better monitoring of unwanted personalities.
Yesterday, he also revealed his plan to rid the City’s street walls of graffiti and will come up with teams to enforce the ordinance against vandalism.
He also instructed Councilor Nestor Archival to come up with an ordinance that will “color code” wires used by utilities and telecommunication companies.
Ugliest things
This is to determine the responsibility over numerous wires left hanging overhead.
“They are one of the ugliest things in the City. Those black things with shades of brown and cobwebs. I call them spaghetti wires,” the mayor said.
He said about 90 percent of those hanging wires belong to a telecommunications company that never bothers to remove them when clients disconnect or when they are no longer usable.
“When somebody gets a new phone they will just string out again. So all wires must be color-coded. We know whom to run after,” he said.
Last year, he announced his intention to have those wires placed underground because they do not look good.
Utility and telecommunication firms last year also tied together in a bundle their wires along the Sinulog grand parade route to minimize eyesores in the City. (RHM)
