Vigilante murders spread to the towns

Two separate shooting incidents that bore similarities to vigilante attacks in Cebu City left two dead and two injured in Cebu Province last Wednesday.

One of the fatalities was a former convict while the other was facing a carnapping case when attacked.

The first incident happened in Barangay Tag-bubunga, Asturias, Cebu at 9 p.m. Wednesday. Barangay Captain Carli-to Sandag reported the incident to the police.

The victim was identified as Geronimo Papaya, 55, allegedly an ex-convict from the place.

In carrying out the attack, three unidentified men used a handgun.

Papaya suffered four gunshot wounds.

The second incident happened while Bara-ngay Sua was celebrating its fiesta. Sua is a mountainous area in the southern town of Argao.

Petronilo Albarando, the victim, was facing a carnapping case.

He died of gunshot wounds in the head, back and other parts of the body.

One identified as Bonifacio Zamora was hit by stray bullet in his back.

Argao police found three empty .45 shells at the crime scene.

Witnesses said the assailants were wearing bonnets and had their faces covered with clothe. They just walked away from the crime scene after the shooting.

Police are having a hard time in the investigation, as even the victim’s wife couldn’t think of any reason somebody wanted her husband dead. She said her husband had no known enemies.

Zamora was taken to a hospital in Argao, but was transferred to Cebu City due to the degree of his injuries.

A man was also wounded in yet another shooting incident in Barangay Lawaan, Dumanjug, Cebu.

Arnold Belocura, 29, was asleep with his family when a man called him from outside the house.

When Belocura went out to check who it was, the man shot him, aiming at his head.

The victim was rushed to a hospital in Cebu City, while the gunman remains unidentified as of press time. (DRT of Superbalita)
