Giants win; Adducul out

Reigning Philippine Cup champion Barangay Ginebra suffered another crucial blow in its title-retention bid as it lost another key player in Romel Adducul to injury and absorbed a third straight defeat at the hands of Purefoods at the Araneta Coliseum Wednesday night.

Three Purefoods players produced career games and the Chunkee Giants wore down the injury-plagued Kings for a 90-82 victory.

James Yap exploded for a personal-high 37 points, Marc Pingris established a career-best 17 rebounds and Roger Yap issued a new high 13 assists as the Giants scored a third successive win to stay within striking distance of the pacesetting San Miguel Beermen (9-2) with an 8-3 win-loss slate.

The Kings slid to sixth place with a 4-6 card as their woes worsened with Adducul joining Andy Seigle and Rodney Santos in the injured list.

Adducul is set to undergo ankle surgery Tuesday that will keep him out for the rest of the season just like Seigle and Santos.

“Worse, Eric Menk is playing hurt,” said Ginebra team manager Allan Caidic of their sad fate.

Purefoods’ Eugene Tejada and Noy Castillo failed to finish the game with Tejada hurting his left ankle and Castillo suffering a pulled calf muscle. Paul Artadi sat out the game due to back spasms. (PBA media bureau)
