MANILA– Multi-titled Efren “Bata” Reyes will lead a star-studded RP Men’s billiards team to the 15th Asian Games on Dec. 1-15 in Doha, Qatar.

Reyes said that he is one of 12 cue artists listed by the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippine (BSCP) to see action in the quadrennial Games along with Alex Pagulayan, Django Bustamante, Antonio Lining and Gandy Valle.

“Yes, I am part of the team recommended by our president Ernesto Fajardo to participate in the Asian Games. I already planned my schedule ahead so that I can represent the country in the Doha Games,” said Reyes.

Billiards and snooker are among the 18 sports recommended by the Asian Games Task Force to the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) to compose the Team Philippines in Doha.

Approval

The POC, which is headed by Jose Cojuangco Jr., will meet in a general assembly next month for the approval of the recommended 129 athletes.

Aside from Reyes, others in the billiards team are Leonardo Andam, Lee Van Cortez, Dennis Orcullo, Rubilyn Amit and Iris Ranola.

Reyes said they will participate in several international tournaments as part of their preparations for the Asiad, where the country has consistently won gold medals since 1998 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Antonio Lining and Bustamanate won the gold in Men’s 9-ball Doubles in the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea.

“It’s been like a tradition already so the expectation of the people is great. That’s why the BSCP will send the best to the Asian Games,” said Reyes.

Reyes will also see action in the 2006 World Pool Championship in November in Manila.

“The world pool championship may be a gauge of our preparedness for the Asiad,” he said.
