Sisos rule Gullas Cup with three finals titles

Another title went to the Siso tennis family yesterday after Bernadine “Niño” Siso won a division championship at the close of the 11th Gullas Tennis Cup at the Cebu Country Club tennis courts.

With his younger sister Sally Mae already with twin plums, Niño annexed another accolade to his widening collection as he earned a hard-fought victory over USJ-R’s JB Canoy, 7-5, 6-3, to bag the Boys 14-Under division crown.

The 2006 Bohol Cviraa gold medalist Jacob Lagman, for his part, won handily over Carlo Ledesma, 6-1, 6-0, to take home the title in the 12-Under division.

Naga, Cebu’s Kennex Abadia joined the bandwagon of champions in the event after getting past Raymund Padigos, 6-2, 6-4, to collect the Boys 16-Under division championship diadem.

University of the Visayas bet James Carl Cañete maintained the Cebuano junior netters’ dominance after fighting back from a second-set debacle and a third-set thriller to beat Sogod, Southern Leyte’s Julrico Pagsiat, 6-4, 4-6, 10-5, and pocket the Boys 18-Under division bragging rights.

Bagging the final honor in the tournament was Macy Solon, a student of Dumaguete City’s Silliman University, who captured her second title by blasting Lovely Soquiño, 6-1, 6-4, in the Girls 16-Under division.

Solon is a member of the RP Girls team that will see action in the 2006 Junior Davis Cup regional qualifying tournament on May 7-13 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Meanwhile, the 2006 Milo Junior Tennis tournament also started yesterday following the conclusion of the Gullas Cup.

Among those who bagged early victories in the Boys 12-Under division were Ariel Jay Torion, who edged out Samuel Kim, 6-1, 6-1, to advance into the next round, and Kay Repunte, who outlasted Ralph Lawrence Necesario, 7-6, 7-5.(JSV)
