Armour ’85, Big Boss ’96 a win away from finals

Armour Wood ’85 and defending champion Big Boss ’96 ousted their respective foes by scoring their second straight wins in the semifinal round of the Cecaba’s 8th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup Thursday night at the City Sports Club-Cebu.

Class ’85 kicked Dewfoam ’88 out of contention, 55-45, while Class ’96 devastated JRJ Enterprises 2000, 85-61.

Class ’85 and ’96 are now assured of at least a tie for a finals berth in their divisions. They just need a win each to formalize their entry into the championship.

Joel Chan topscored with 18 points, while Edvin Kaw and Stephen Lee each posted 11 markers for Class ’88, which led, 45-34, after three quarters and used it as a buffer in the final canto.

Rey Kenneth Ng posted a season-best 16 points, but Class ’88 bowed out of the tournament with a 1-2 slate in the semifinals. Top gunner Erwin Yu was held to a season-low five points.

In the main game, Rogelio Donayre scattered a season-high 24 points, Shaun Christopher Wang had 19 points, while Franklin Neil Ong and Gerald Chua combined for 21 points as Class ’96 stepped into the threshold of the Division II finals.

Class ’96 led by only seven at halftime, 40-33, but detonated a 24-13 bomb in the third period before knocking out Class 2000 with a 21-15 run in the payoff period.
