Visitors outperform Cebu bets on day 1

Members of the Cebu Aeromodeler’s Club Inc. (Caci) took the backseat in the opening day of the 20th Philippine National Aero Modelers Tournament as the visitors lorded it over the initial two events yesterday at the Cebu Boardwalk in Mandaue City.

Manila’s Paolo Montemayor bagged the first major plum in the tournament, which is being presented by Caci, Federation Aeronautique Internationale, 3D Hobbies and Sports Association, Inc. and Sun.Star Publications Network, after he bagged the title in the Precision Aerobatics competition of the Sportsman category.

Back in the sport after being away for 15 years, licensed pilot/builder Phil Vergara, who hails from ICC Village in Maningcol, Ozamiz City, secured the second spot. Jun Ng landed at third, while Gidget Gocolay was fourth.

Intermediate division

In the Intermediate division, Titus Alberto topped the event with 2,000 points.

Caci’s Michael Chua was second with 1,935.3099 points, followed by Erwin Dematera, Anthony Ballesteros, Armando Ereneta, Chepit Dulay and Danilo Go.

In the Beginners division’s Helicopter event, another out-of-town bet, Emilio Infante, tallied took away the championship, while Caci’s Poy Ilano was second.

Meanwhile, four-time Philippine National Aeromodelers Tournament champion Julius “Jay-jay” Neri Jr. and Poy Ilano will join other debuting Advanced and Master’s division participants today.

Neri, the Sun.Star Cebu vice president for marketing, is the only one to win the Gold Cup trophy in the 20-year history of the tournament.
