Tagbilaran City sends four fighters to finals

Tagbilaran City is on the right course for back-to-back Visayas Inter-City Developmental Amateur Boxing titles as it sent four of its seven fighters to the gold-medal round of the 20th edition of the only developmental boxing tournament in the country, currently held in Tacloban City.

It will be a tough battle for the Boholanos as Mandaue City will try to reclaim the title by sending three fighters to the finals. Host team Tacloban City also has three fighters in the finals.

Team Cebu City, backed by M. Lhuillier Sports Development Foundation, only has two finalists however, they are battled tested fighters.

Tagbilaran’s Jenno Cabugngan is back in the 34-kilogram finals but he has a tough task as he will take on Gerald Suico of Mandaue City for the gold medal.

Cabugngan is joined by last year’s bronze medalist Francis Lee Cutanda, who is seeking his first gold medal in the 38kg division.

Tagbilaran’s Jommel Barimbao will fight for the 40kg gold medal.

Team Cebu City has 40kg fighter Jomari Yuson and the Jestoni Borres, who is fighting in the 45kg division.

Jefferson Barriga and Wilbeth Loberanis are the other Mandaue City boxers in the finals.

At press time, Cabugngan and Suico were still battling it out for the 34kg gold medal, Barriga fought Efren Codiñera of Tacloban City (36kg), Cutanda fought Loberanis (38kg), Yuson battled Barimbao (40kg), Borres fought Tacloban’s Junrel Casimiro and Arisga fought a Palo, Leyte boxer for the 48kg gold.

Another Tacloban City bet, Romnick Villegas, was touted to easily win the 42kg gold medal. (RCM)
