DILG 7 official wins award

FOR helping in the promotion of effective and efficient public service, Lawyer Danilo Almendras of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) 7 was recognized as the most outstanding resident ombudsman for 2005.

Almendras, who is serving as the chief of the operations division and the legal officer of DILG 7, was chosen for his “exemplary performance as resident ombudsman and for upholding the zeal of integrity and honesty in the discharge of his duties and functions.”

Good governance

He believes he got the award for helping promote good governance.

He earned the recognition among all the resident ombudsmen of Regions 6, 7 and 8 government line agencies, local government units, state colleges and universities and government-owned and-controlled corporations.

Almendras, who has served the DILG 7 since 2001, said he gives guidance to local officials, helps in the settlement of issues and in policy making.

But since the DILG 7 is not a revenue-generating agency, he doesn’t have to guard the use of public funds, which is one of the functions of a resident ombudsman.

Resident ombudsmen are deputized as ombudsman investigators with functions and powers stipulated in Administrative Order 10 of 2001.

Plaque

Almendras received a plaque of recognition from the Office of the Ombudsman-Visayas through Deputy Ombudsman Director Virgina Palanca-Santiago last April 25.

He had served as city attorney and city administrator of the Cebu City Government for six years before he joined the DILG 7 in 2001.

The award was given during the 7th Visayas-wide Annual Convention of Resident Ombudsmen held at the EGI Resort and Hotel, Lapu-Lapu City.

During the convention, the DILG 7 was also cited as the Most Cooperative Agency in Central Visayas for the “selfless dedication and support” it has given to the anti-graft office in the actualization of its vision and mission and in its crusade for a graft-free nation. (CYR)
