Bacolod downs DBC By Mike T. Limpag Sun.Star Staff Reporter
BACOLOD City solidified its hold of the top spot with a hard-earned 3-2 win over Don Bosco College (DBC)-FFC, while defending champion Hiroshi FC blanked Foundation University of Dumaguete City, 3-0, in the yesterday’s 6th Cebu Inter Club Invitational Tournament Men’s Open at the University of San Carlos – Technological Center.
The West Negros College-manned Bacolod now holds the number one spot with nine points, on a 3-0 win-loss mark, while Hiroshi dislodged DBC at second on goal difference.
DBC paid dearly for its loose marking on the defensive end as Richard Cañedo struck twice for a 3-1 Bacolod lead with less than 30 minutes left to play. DBC, managed to come within one, 3-2, but the WNC defense held on, while veterans Glen Ramos and Reydrick Viliran, who joined the game in the final 20 minutes, failed to turn the tide.
Ramos and Bacolod playing-coach Norman Fegidero, both former national team mainstays, also got a little too physical and got booked for a yellow card each late in the match.
Meanwhile, host Queen City United scored a 5-0 dumping of Ormoc, keeping its semifinal hopes alive.
Fourth
After dropping its first two matches to DBC and Bacolod, Queen City now sits at fourth spot, dislodging Foundation University by five goals.
Former Hiroshi mainstays Martin Bontia and Josaphat Sacil scored the first two goals for Queen City before Marlon Rey Baring scored twice and Bong Aller converted a penalty for the win.
On the other hand, Hiroshi’s new recruit Arndt Kollmar came up with a few saves yesterday in the 3-0 win. After strikers Junard Aguilar and Epifanio Ynot bungled their early chances, including Ynot’s strike the hit the bar, Kollmar’s reflex prevented Dumaguete from taking the early lead.
Today’s matches
Ynot finally struck in the 39th for a 1-0 halftime lead and John Paul Arranquez and Jake Acre added one each in the second half.
Hiroshi will play West Negros today, while Queen City takes on Dumaguete and Don Bosco faces Ormoc.
In the Ladies’ division at the Sacred Heart School-Jesuit field, the Ladies Football Club-CDO cruised to its third win, a 2-1 escape over Mulbachs, while San Roque defeated Ormoc, 2-1, on goals by Rhodora Toledo and Jack Elnar.
In the 38-above division, Ormoc defeated Hiroshi, 4-1, while DBC was leading Queen City, 1-0, at press time.
