ARMM investments reach P146M in Q1
Zamboanga - Efforts of the regional government to usher in socio-economic development through the implementation of effective programs and policies for the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) continues to payoff, the Bureau of Public Information announced.
Issues, such as peace and security, strategic infrastructure, literacy among others, are also being addressed by the government.
Based on the first quarter report of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Armm, the region’s economic indicators significantly increased during the first quarter of this year reaching P146 million in investments.
“This is an important indication that we are on the right track, and soon enough, our people will finally experience considerable improvements in their lives,” Armm Regional Gov. Datu Zaldy Uy Ampatuan said.
Investments in Armm provinces dramatically increased at the start of 2006, with Tawi-Tawi leading with a total of P80 million.
Congress
Tawi-Tawi, the coun-try’s top producer of seaweeds, played host to the 5th Armm Business Congress held last year.
Tawi-Tawi is followed by the City of Marawi, which registered investments amounting to P39 million and Maguindanao with P10 million.
Job generation has also improved in the region.
There were 1,695 jobs registered for the first quarter.
The department was also able to register a total of 330 business names and export earnings from La Frutera amounted to P18 million.
The regional government has been intensely undertaking means to jump-start economic growth in the region.
Among these, is to attract crucial investments and create a more productive business climate within the region.
The effects of sporadic armed conflicts, which have affected peace and security in the region, have been greatly reduced because of the mechanisms that were put in place by the regional government.
Mobilization
The mobilization and strengthening of the Regional Peace and Order Council enabled quick conflict resolution and settlement of some political and family feuds, which are often the root cause of armed conflicts in the region.
Ampatuan has previously directed his cabinet to conform the Regional Economic Agenda to the priority concerns he laid down in his first state of the region address.
Armm line agencies such as the DTI, the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) and the Regional Board of Investments have been intensifying their efforts to develop the region’s potential industries.
Improved
DAF-Armm recently conducted the Mindanao Investment Forum for Seaweeds, which pooled together key players in the seaweeds industry from Mindanao and highlighted the areas that need to be improved so Armm can make the most of its being the country’s top producer of seaweeds.
Meanwhile, efforts are underway for halal industry development in the region. Both the DTI-Armm and DAF-Armm are undertaking means to establish a viable and credible halal industry.
Credible
DAF-Armm is working on implementing important schemes that would increase the production of major agricultural products and the DTI-Armm is finalizing a credible halal certification scheme, which the region will adopt.
Jakim, Malaysia’s halal certification board, will be providing technical assistance to the region in the crafting of its halal certification scheme.
This arrangement has been reached during the official state visit of Regional Governor Ampatuan to the State of Malacca earlier this year. (CO/Sun.Star Zamboanga/Sunnex)
