Barangays to promote specific products, service
BAGUIO City - Superior products or excellent service from each of the city’s barangays will be encouraged to prosper under the “One Barangay, One Product” proposal approved on first reading by the City Council.
Authored by Councilor Daniel Fariñas, the proposal takes after the “One Town, One Product” as adopted from Japan’s 1979 “One Village, One Product” program, and calls for the barangays to identify their chief product or service.
A project, which encourages entrepreneurship “through the use of indigenous raw materials” and creation of jobs with the use of “local skills and talents,” the proposal takes cognizance of Baguio’s silver craft industry, processed foods, such as the ube jam, or San Carlos’ provision of good laborers in the construction business.
Generation
Under the proposed ordinance, barangays will be able to “generate their own income generating enterprises, create additional jobs, and augment financial needs to participating groups or individuals within their own barangays.”
If approved, the project will be done with consultation and in coordination with the agriculture, environment, interior, land reform, science and technology and tourism departments and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.
The trade department shall also be tasked to assist and support in the start-up and operation, through business counseling, skills and entrepreneurial training, product design and development, appropriate technologies and marketing.
A trade exhibit shall also promote barangay enter-prises. (Sun.Star Ba- guio/Sunnex)
