Limpag: Let iTunes manage your phone’s songs By Max Limpag Celltalk
LIKE IPOD. Managing your iPod playlist is very easy because of its integration with iTunes. With the integration, you just drag the songs you want to be transferred into the music player in the iPod link in iTunes.
Apple, the maker of both iTunes, limits synchronization of music tracks to iPods and iTunes-enabled phones (currently only certain Motorola models).
It’s a pity as managing music files using iTunes is very user-friendly. In my case, I almost exclusively use iTunes in listening to music and podcasts because the software catalogues music so well and I like my music library well-organized.
I searched for a hack or software that can make iTunes synchronize music tracks with a Sony Ericsson K750i and found the USB Mass Storage Synchronizer. The free program allows you to let iTunes manager your Walkman or Sony Ericsson Smartphone, Samsung MP3 phones, Nokia music mobiles and even Palm devices.
I tested it and it worked flawlessly with the K750i. The steps in using it that I will describe below is based on a Sony Ericsson setup and if you’re, using a different brand, may not work for you.
PREPARATION. Before using the software, make sure you have the latest Sony Ericsson firmware. For the K750i, it is R1BC002. To check your firmware, do the following (for < push the joystick to the left, for >push the joystick to the right):
>*<<*<*
If it isn’t R1BC002, you’d be better off not using it because your firmware (especially if it’s still R1N035) has bugs when it comes to transferring files via the USB to the phone’s memory stick.
Also, make sure you do not have a folder named MP3 in the root directory or top level of any of your drives (i.e. c:/mp3 or d:/mp3). The program looks for such a folder and synchs the songs to it. I found this out the hard way when the program wiped out my collection of Frank Sinatra and Me First and The Gimme Gimmes tracks.
INSTALLATION. Download the software at www.teavuihuang.com/massstorsync/ and unzip the folder it into your c: drive. Copy the MassStorSync.lnk file into your desktop then click on it; this will create a My Sony Device songlist in your iTunes.
Drag songs you want transferred to the phone into My Sony Device and once you finish your playlist, click on the MassStorSync.lnk file in your desktop again. The program will then start transferring the music tracks to your phone and you’d know when it’s done because it will notify you via a pop-up window.
If you ever encounter errors in the transfer, just delete everything in your memory stick’s MP3 folder and then start synching again.
