Inmate, wanting to escape, holds baby hostage

An inmate of the Bagong Buhay Rehabilitation Center (BBRC) yesterday held hostage a one-year-old daughter of a visitor using a sharpened iron bar.

While still holding the baby, Mario Padilla, 43, told jail guards he would free the girl only if he could walk out of the city jail.

The drama, which took place past 12 noon, did not last more than 10 minutes. It happened during the inmates’ visiting hour.

Chona (real name withheld) was standing near the steel door of an isolation cell waiting for her boyfriend to come out when Padilla grabbed her baby from her arms.

Negotiations

While negotiating with Padilla, jail guards found a chance to grab the girl and held Padilla’s right hand, which was holding the improvised knife, so he could not harm the hostage.

The baby suffered a minor graze in her right ear after the commotion.

Jail Warden Efren Nemenio said Padilla was on his way back to the isolation cell after relieving himself in the comfort room.

When Padilla saw Chona with a baby near the door of the isolation cell, he grabbed the baby hoping that he could use her as shield in escaping.

With Padilla’s latest violation, Nemenio said he was transferred to another isolation cell far from the main gate and the visiting area so he could not repeat the escape attempt.

Padilla has been in and out of the jail. He was sent back to prison last March 10 for a robbery case in which he insisted his innocence, prompting him to try escaping. (AIV)
