Cebu Open soccer tilt suffers no-show, ineligibilty issues

Non-appearances and other controversies hounded the 6th Cebu Inter Club Invitational Tournament at the University of San Carlos-Technological Center field.

The Don Bosco College 38-above Men’s team got stripped of their chance to play in the finals against Ormoc after organizers decided that one of their players, Genard Aller, was not eligible to play.

DBC was informed of the decision just minutes before the final was to start.

The penalty gave Queen City the right to face Ormoc, and the visitors promptly defeated QC, 2-0, on goals by Allen Perez and Danny Alajas to take the P15,000 top prize.

Proof

“We asked them for proof that our player is indeed under-age since we showed them papers (supporting our claim) Sunday night but they didn’t accept it,” Neil Montesclaros of DBC said.

Montesclaros also told Sun.Star Cebu that during the Sunday night meeting, when Aller’s eligibility was questioned, they were informed that they were set to talk on the issue further before the start of today’s final.

Also, during their team managers’ meeting before the event started, Queen City’s Richard Montayre told coaches that to show proof of their player’s age, “they only need to show their drivers license, company IDs or other proof.”

Montesclaros, who sits on the CebuFA board, will file a protest against the organizer’s conduct with the CebuFa.

Meanwhile, the Men’s Open wasn’t spared of any problems after Foundation University-Dumaguete decided to skip their final two matches, while Ormoc failed to show up for their match against DBC.

A Queen City official said that Dumaguete was not satisfied with the officiating, while Ormoc’s failure to show up was due to a bad case of hangover. (ML)
